happy Music: Better Than Today - Kylie Minogue Reading: Morning is a Long Time Coming (FAIL, haha)Fun times! I got to go to a free screening of “Scott Pilgrim vs. the World” at Rave tonight. For knowing Edgar Wright’s name, I got a Scott Pilgrim hat and shirt!! I Tweeted it at him but it’ll prolly get lost in the shuffle. Sadface.
I went with my best friend Corinne. She didn’t enjoy it mostly because she’s not their target audience. Even without the comic book elements, at the heart of the story, it’s about a boy falling in love with a girl and the drama that comes with it. I don’t think that part was lost on her, but she kept focusing on the juvenile humor of it all. Beneath the sheen of the juvenile humor and MTV editing (which was very Edgar-ish), I thought it was a fantastic movie. The cast had great chemistry, it zipped along at the right pace (no slow parts IMO), it ended on the right note. I’m not their target audience either. I didn’t read the comics beforehand. I was lured only by the pretty people from the trailer, lol. But it’s the job of the filmmakers to present an adaptation to acknowledge those who read the comics, as well as make it simple enough for anyone lured in by the trailer to have a good time and enjoy it.
But with that sort of “I’m too old for this” mentality, I think I’ll stay as young as possible in my heart. I go to movies to forget about the real world for a few hours and get wrapped up in someone else’s drama that can only be solved onscreen. The problems in the real world can’t be solved in 1.5 hours. If I wanted a movie dripping with deep and thoughtful dialogue, I’d go watch that kind of movie. But I didn’t and I’m not. I wanted to go to the movie to have a good time. And I did. She shut down as we were walking back to the car, and I know she was decompressing her feelings about the movie in her head. She does that a lot. I’m sure we’ll get a blog post out of it.
