Round and Round

Since this is a free-for-all day, I’m gonna go for a stream of consciousness blog with some edits, lol. I miss blogging, I really do. But sometimes you have to take a break from the things you love in order to find out why you love it. Absence makes the heart grow fonder and all that cheesy shit, lol.

I’m selling some CDs, DVDs, and electronics on Amazon. Help me out and buy something? Buy it for your sweetheart? Dog? Frenemy? Or something?

Right now I’ve been fleshing out this story I call “Unmagical.” Working title. It doesn’t really roll off the tongue, but it captures the story pretty accurately. Basically this brother and sister have to rescue their parents and little brother from a despotic king in the Underground. They grew up not believing in magic because their father didn’t. And his wife merely followed his lead.

SPOILER ALERT!!

Their father doesn’t believe in magic because magic destroyed his family when he was a child. He’s actually the grandson of Jason and Medea. And you know how that story went down. Wikipedia said that the children Medea had with Jason were old enough to have children of their own. But in Euripedes’ play, the kids were kids. So I’m clearly taking liberties with stories that we know so well.

They basically journey their way across the Underground to get some answers. They’ve joined forces with a Bigfoot, a unicorn, a prince, Puss in Boots, a dragon, and eventually, La Llorona and a Headless Horseman will join their group. They’ve met an Erlking, fairies, gnomes, the Sphinx, and harpies so far. It’s hard to put every magical creature I want in there, lol. Rather than make up fantastical creatures, I’d rather use ones we know and remix them a little.

The inspiration for the story came when I was watching “Labyrinth” and thinking to myself (as I am liable to do), why are we supposed to stop believing in magic when we “grow up?”

SPOILER ALERT!!

Jareth asks her to stay with him in the Labyrinth forever right, kidnapping her kid brother in a weird act of seduction. But she rejects him and returns to the “real world.” The world she left behind follows her. She’ll always need them right. But wouldn’t an “adult” think it odd if these creatures appeared when she did need them?

So what about adulthood urges us to say “OK, that’s it, no more magic.” And if you do continue to believe in it, you’re talked about for being immature and silly. And what’s the nature of “growing up” anyways? When we fall in love, get married, have kids? When we turn 17 or 18 or 21? When everyone else around is “growing up” too? When we’re declaring bankruptcy? Where’s the dividing line? Should there even be a line?

Right now I’ve got about 35 pages. It’s REALLY good. I haven’t written anything like this in ages,. I think I’m making up for lost time. I can only imagine how many pages I’ll have when I’m done! I’ll prolly have a proper manuscript that will only need touching up and edits.

Otherwise, it’s the same ol’ same ol’ in my life. Working, spending money, chores, taking care of my dog.

I did make it a point to take a trip every month, even if it’s an overnight trip to someplace I’ve been before. Last month it was North Carolina (someplace I’d never been before). This month it’s Disneyland. I’m hoping that by going by myself I can maximize the single rider lines, lol. Next month I will be going back to Modesto to attend my best friend’s baby shower, just waiting on her to nail the date. September I think I want to go to San Diego for my birthday. I wanted to go to Disneyland but I want all of us to go. T can’t go ’cause she’s got her wedding to pay for. A can’t go ’cause she’ll be pregnant. Plus I’ve never been to San Diego. I wanna see my inaanak on her own turf. October, maybe I’ll go to the Northern Nevada Railroad like I wanted to. IDK about November and December, so we’ll see what catches my eye.

Yeah, boring, I know right? ;)

I really like the idea of going somewhere you’ve never been before every month!

And also loving your story idea!

    Gill replied:

I’ve noticed that if I go someplace every month, even if it’s just a mini-break, it keeps me on my toes. If I wait to go places, then I get depressed after because I have nothing to look forward to.

Thanks! It might be the story that gets me published. That’s how awesome I feel abt it. :D
