Sugamix: The Remixes

mixtape

So here are some rare, exclusive and unofficial remixes that I’ve spent almost two weeks tracking down. I bought/am watching quite a few more Sugababes CDs on eBay right now, just waiting to get paid before I pay those ginormous currency conversion fees. The things I do for fandom, haha. I’ll probably flesh this mixtape out in the future.

  1. About You Now (Kissy Sell Out Remix): This song is so perfect on its own, it’s almost a tragedy to try and remix it. I like Kissy Sell Out, even though I think their remixes are hit and miss. I don’t like the one they did for “Song 4 Mutya.”
  2. Angels With Dirty Faces (Audio Drive Remix): This could almost be a dub, because there’s practically no vocals in it.
  3. Caught in a Moment (D-Bop Radio Mix): Speeding up a ballad is hard, and there are portions where my ears go, “whut?” But I love this song and wanted to include at least one remix of it. I’m trying to track down more, and having a hard time, haha.
  4. Change (Wideboys Edit): I’ll be honest, I don’t like the song to begin with. This was the only remix I could stomach. I don’t like the Dub or the proper Wideboys remix of “Change.” No disrespect to Wideboys because I like their stuff usually.
  5. Denial (Totally Enormous Extinct Dinosaurs – Microceratops Remax): this remix is indescribable. It really strips down the vocals and makes the song more light-hearted overall. It almost sounds like an 80s ballad when it starts and then it goes all loopy on you. Love it, my favourite remix of a Sugababes song, hands down. It’s not even official and frankly, I don’t give a damn. :)
  6. Easy (Seamus Haji & Paul Emanuel Remix): “Easy” is a perfect song the way it is, so if I had to choose a remix, it would be this one.
  7. Follow Me Home (Soulseekerz Vocal Mix): Again, it’s very rare that a remix can pull off speeding up a ballad to be club ready. I think this one gets pretty close to the perfect “sped up ballad that can be rocked in a club” remix.
  8. Freak Like Me (Girls on Top Dancehall Remix): All it does is layer the girls’ vocals over a dancehall beat, but I love it. That’s how good of a song it is. Take the vocals and put it over another backbeat and still come up with a slice of fried gold. Which is basically what the original did, but whatever, haha.
  9. Get Sexy (Hadouken! Remix): I have never heard a Hadouken! song in my life before, so when I heard this, I was like, “Goddamn.” Turns out they’re heavily into the “grindie” scene, and I APPROVE. I like the effects that play about a minute into the song that sound like a demented violin scratching against the 1s and 2s. It’s hard to explain but download this and you’ll hear it. I’ll also have to chase down some Hadouken! albums too. This remix is too perfect not to. My third favourite remix.
  10. Girls (Klaus Ahlund Reworked): Since Boots used the same sample that the ‘Babes did, I’m pretty sure that’s why Girls didn’t go over so well when “Catfights and Spotlights” came out. I think that this remix is so incredibly perfect. They should’ve put this on the record instead of the album version. There’s no way you can’t NOT dance when this comes on. My second favourite remix.
  11. Hole in the Head (Armand Van Helden Remix): I basically want to have Armand Van Helden’s children, so I am obviously going to put his remix on my mixtape, lulz.
  12. In the Middle (Ruff & Jam Radio Edit): I like the extra guitars in the beginning. I never really liked the singles from “Three,” so me being nice to songs from that album is an accomplishment.
  13. Little Lady Love (About 2 Remix): Now, this is an incredibly rare track. I bought the “New Year” CD2 single on eBay specifically for this track. I’ve never heard the original and don’t think it’s ever been leaked or released elsewhere. But regardless, it’s really cute. Everything I find from the “One Touch” sessions makes me fall in love with the original lineup even more.
  14. My Love is Pink (Stonebridge Club Mix): “My Love is Pink” is a perfectly decent pop song on its own. This remix does slow down the tempo since the original is so up.
  15. No Can Do (WaWa Club Mix): Out of the remixes I have for “No Can Do,” this is probably the most listenable one. I usually like Bimbo Jones’ remixes but the one he did for “No Can Do” was not very good.
  16. Push the Button (DJ Prom Club Remix): This was the version that was on “Overloaded: The Remix Collection” and it’s definitely an accessible remix. It makes a dance-y track even more danceable, if that’s possible.
  17. Red Dress (Cagedbaby Remix): I think it borrows too much from the original backbeat to qualify as a remix but I like it. It’s decent.
  18. Round Round (Seani B Remix): I think because the Xenomania-produced original is so up-tempo, all the remixes for this song take on a slower beat. I didn’t like the Soulwax version very much. I like the rap in the middle by whom I assume is Seani B.
  19. Run for Cover (J-Walk Remix): The intro had me at hello. It adds this spice and lays the groundwork to a sad song that makes it easier to listen to, and I adore the original.
  20. Shape (D-Bops Vocal Breakdown Club Mix): I like the reworkings D-Bops did for the pre-chorus and the hook. The bongo drums (?) in the backbeat are really cool. Since the original samples “Shape of My Heart” by Sting so heavily, the reworkings make aural sense.
  21. Stronger (Almighty Club Mix): This is a song where the remix improves on the original. I never liked “Stronger” as a single but Almighty does a really good job in making it easier for me to listen to.
  22. Too Lost in You (Kujay DaDa’s Shaker Remix): I like the bass line. I don’t think “Too Lost in You” is one of their better singles but it definitely lends itself well to the up-tempo beat.
  23. Ugly (Suga Shaker Vocal Club Mix): I still remember when this album came out, and as such, this song holds a lot of good memories for me. This remix does the original justice. Doesn’t take too much out and adds just enough in to make you appreciate both.
  24. Walk This Way (Yoad Mix) – Sugababes vs. Girls Aloud: I can’t believe that out of all the possible remixes of this song, they had to commission the Yoad Mix. I don’t like it. The remix just doesn’t sit well with me at all.
