Ooh, first day of August’s NaBloPoMo. :) The theme this month is tomorrow. I hope I can stick to posting everyday. I did it pretty well last time, except for that one day, haha.

I got a pretty pink Dell Inspiron 546 the other day. Her name is “Torchwood” because my last one was “Tardis.” It’s faster and not as bloaty as my other one. Which is probably why it blue screened so much. :( The keyboard is kinda strange because it’s smaller than my old one. So when I go to hit a key, it’s the wrong one, haha. I’m donating my old tower to my parents. The viruses have finally eaten theirs alive. We had that computer since Cali. Lotsa good memories. My Ate’s gonna clean it up and give it to them. Speaking of which, I should give it to her. It’s sorta just sitting next to my old one.

In the spirit of tomorrow, I have been researching grad school. I know right? After years & years of whining and complaining and crying, my Bachelor’s degree is really that close. I found a lovely MLIS (Masters of Library Science) program at San Jose State in California. There are so many pros to this program for me.

Lists are awesome:

1. I can take it entirely online. Except for a few in-house sessions, I can stay in Vegas if I find a job and participate.
2. The curriculum. Just reading the course descriptions have me in a tizzy.
3. You can specialize in obvious things like Public, Teacher and Youth Librarianship, but the one that nailed it for me was Web Design & Technology.
4. I only need an overall 3.0 GPA, no letters of recommendation or anything.
5. It’s in California!

The cons:

1. The cost, easily $20,000, give or take.
2. How I will be paying for it.
3. If I can find a job that will let me sneak off to take the in-house modules. Perhaps if I find a job at a public library they might give me a concession? I’m sure it’d look good to an employer to see this.
4. I have a 2.93 with only 3 more classes left. Meep. Nothing like a little pressure to get good grades though, right? lol.
5. You have to have a B or better in all of them for it to count towards your degree.
6. The course load. It’s a Masters program. I can’t dick around like I have with my Bachelor’s. Having a full time job might conflict with it.
7. Actual admission. It’s first come, first served. So I don’t even know if I’d get in. Sure, I could research other schools but I really have my heart set on SJSU.

Also, they have regular and special session students. Students who gain admission for Spring and Fall 2010 are special session. The difference between the two is that regular session students can get their ish paid for by the state; special session can’t. And there’s no way to change from special to regular once you apply and are accepted. It’s weird. I think it’s because of California’s budget problems that they’re making potential students automatically be special session.

But I feel really good about it. So I hope that feeling is my intuition is telling me that this is right. If not, I’ll continue to research MLIS programs in other schools and states. We’ll see how it goes.

October 1 is the day the next step of my life is decided. I’m so excited!!

?: “What do you think about grad school? Are you in it? Would you apply if you aren’t yet?

Ever since I graduated, 2 years now! Its always been A) Why haven’t you got a job? and B) Why aren’t you doing a Masters.

But for me the cost is more of an issue and cos I’m still not sure where my heart lies.

But if you think this program will boost your future earnings, and you can afford it, go for it!

    Miss Gill replied:

It’s hard to find a job with the state of our economies the way it is. People should lay off. It’s not like you’re not trying.

I’m not even worried about future earnings, tbqh. In order to break into librarianship, you HAVE to have a Masters, period. It’s one of the only career tracks that insist on it. I’m hoping I can get some kickass financial aid to do it. *crosses fingers*

I’m pretty sure I mentioned about it over at Twitter but yay that you’re almost done your BA! :)

The MA program sounds exciting, very cool that you can do most of the modules at home :) #1 and #2 of your cons list is totally understandable, I think anyone who’s considered, applied or were accepted to grad school have those two at the top of their list xD

I have a 2.93 with only 3 more classes left. Meep. Nothing like a little pressure to get good grades though, right? lol.

lol, I know the feeling; two of the schools I applied to last year had conditionals on their offers where I had to get a 3.3 final. I was freaking out so bad about it because I was so close to that average and I was taking a course with a pretty hardcore professor but in the end I actually graduated on the dot, lol. In short: you can do it :D *hugs*

    Miss Gill replied:

I think I mentioned it everywhere, lol. It’s been a tough road but I’m glad I pulled through in one piece.

I *can* do it. I have to stay positive & upbeat. I can’t slack off whatsoever. Pressure is good. :D
